Sunrise May 16th
4:30am the Alaskan sunrise was beautiful

The mountains seemed to meet the clouds

It kept getting better
and better until it was glorious!

The sun reflected off of everything

around the early morning solitary ship

It showed the mountains behind the mountains

and a rain storm playing in the distance

but finally we had "lift off"
and the day began in earnest.
Hubbard Glacier - Pilot
The first order of business
was the arrival
of the Hubbard Glacier pilot. As they
say on the London subways: "Mind the gap!"

|
That first step's a doozie! |

And then we headed for the glacier!
Navigators Lounge
People had already started gathering
in the Navigators Lounge
looking for signs of the glacier
and signs of aquatic life

Is that a sea lion?
Nope, just some dirty ice
more and more ice appeared
meaning the glacier wasn't far now

What that in the water?
It looks like a whale!
Thar she blows!

Ice
and mountains
and the then the Hubbard glacier

Big chunks of ice had calved
as we go closer
and closer

There was another glacier on the left called the Turner Glacier

but we were heading for Hubbard

And ice was everywhere!
Let's go outside and see it! Hubbard

And there was cracking and popping as the ice fell off the
front of glacier and ground together.

Ice Textures

The ice had different
textures

and colors
some even had round holes in it

Goodbye to Hubbard
We followed the ice flow back out
past the burnt valley

and the beacon on the point
beautiful scenery also

and took one look back
at two glaciers
